Q: What motivated you to join OCPRSA, and what do you hope to gain from your membership experience?
I joined OCPRSA to connect with like-minded professionals and gain insights from industry leaders. The platform offers continuous learning and professional development, helping me stay updated with industry trends and best practices. I aim to build a robust professional network and enhance my PR and communication skills to continue developing impactful community initiatives.
Q: With a diverse background that includes biochemistry, medical assistance, legal roles, and public relations, how has each of these experiences contributed to your overall approach and success in the PR industry?
My diverse experiences have equipped me with a unique perspective and comprehensive approach to PR challenges, especially in the healthcare and legal sectors. Biochemistry and medical assistance provided a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and patient care, allowing me to craft clear health-related messaging. Legal roles honed my analytical skills and attention to detail and enabled me to navigate regulatory and ethical considerations in PR campaigns. My work in public relations has allowed me to deliver compelling narratives that reach target audiences to drive positive change.
Q: As a participant in OCPRSA's YoPro mentorship program, what has been the most rewarding aspect of your involvement so far?
The most rewarding aspect of participating in YoPro has been collaborating with a seasoned mentor who provides valuable guidance and support. This mentorship will refine my PR skills and prepare me for leadership roles, enabling me to continue my advocacy work in addressing disparities and lack of education related to healthcare and legal support among underserved communities.
Q: Can you describe a mentorship experience, either as a mentor or mentee, that significantly impacted your career?
As a mentee in healthcare and legal internships within Vietnamese and Hispanic communities, I gained invaluable experience from mentors who emphasized empathy and cultural competence. My mentor, Patty, helped me foster industry relationships and acquire the necessary skills for organizing community health and legal educational seminars. Combining this knowledge with my PR expertise enabled me to raise awareness about these events among community members, ensuring their access to these valuable resources and securing support from local decision-makers.
Q: As someone who has served in various leadership and advisory capacities, what top 3 qualities do you believe are essential to being a successful leader in the public relations industry, and why?
For me, the top three qualities essential for being a successful leader in the public relations industry are:
- Adaptability: The PR industry is dynamic. Adaptability allows leaders to stay current and embrace new opportunities and is crucial for navigating uncertainties and maintaining relevance.
- Communication: Clear and engaging communication is the cornerstone of public relations. Leaders must convey messages effectively and manage crises while maintaining transparency. Strong communication skills ensure messages are accurately delivered and well-received.
- Empathy: Understanding and addressing the needs and concerns of diverse communities is essential in PR. Empathy helps to connect and build trust with target
audiences, enabling leaders to create more meaningful and relatable campaigns.
