Member Spotlight: Q&A with Christopher Trela

Posted on Jul. 26, 2023  /  Member Spotlight  /   0

This week we meet Christopher Trela, a true icon in the Orange County PR world! It’s very likely you have already met Chris by taking one of his courses at Chapman University or by pitching him stories at the Newport Beach Independent. Always kind and approachable to all, if you have not already had the pleasure of meeting him—please be sure to say hello to Chris at our next OCPRSA gathering. And as the co-chair of the 2023 PROTOS awards, you’ll most definitely see him at that not-to-be-missed event this fall!

Q: Please tell us about you! Your job, etc.

I wear several hats (sometimes one too many!). I am Artistic Assistant Professor of Public Relations at Chapman University, I own ArtsPR (PR consulting for arts organizations) and I am the Editor of the Newport Beach Independent newspaper, as well as the Dining Columnist for the OC Business Journal. I like to say it keeps me busy and out of trouble, but I still manage to find trouble (a.k.a fun) as needed.

Q: What brought you to the OCPRSA?

I have been a member/fan of OCPRSA for around 15 years. I have been honored with several PROTOS awards over the years, including the Distinguished Service Award in 2021. I joined the 2023 OCPRSA board because I wanted to get more involved in what the organization does. Somehow I agreed to be co-chair of PROTOS this year, but I’m having a terrific time.

Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?

Stay relevant! Keep learning!
