This edition the spotlight is on Kathryn Kelly, director of client services at Powerhouse+Co. From mentoring to media relations, this outstanding PR professional and University of San Diego alum shines! Meet Kathryn!
Q: Please tell us about you! Your job, etc.
I am the Director of Client Services at Powerhouse+Co., a full-service agency specializing in the restaurant, consumer and franchise industries. I’ve been a proud member of the Powerhouse team for nearly three years, where my role has evolved from account management and day-to-day client communications to wider account team oversight, focused on ensuring we’re delivering the best results possible for our clients. I love leading teams and mentoring budding PR pros, and seeing them secure stellar media opportunities and crushing campaigns that have been a long time in the making. I’m passionate about so many aspects of PR, but in my opinion, there’s nothing more satisfying than booking clients on TV and seeing the immediate impact of a strong segment. If there’s a TV segment to be handled, I’m always game to be there, no matter how early the wake-up call! When I’m outside of “the office,” I enjoy staying active, reading a good book and dining out at new or tried-and-true restaurants (I like to call it R&D!).
Q: What brought you to the OCPRSA?
Powerhouse+Co.’s CEO, Kristin Daher, is a long-time member and encouraged me to join when I began working at Powerhouse. I was new to professional networks, as I hadn’t been part of one before and my university didn’t have PRSSA, but it’s been a great way to meet other local PR professionals. I love the creative events and interactive learning opportunities!
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?
Actively listen! As a young(er) PR pro, I would keep my ears open to general office conversations and client calls whenever I could, and I learned so much by absorbing how my peers and seasoned PR pros handled themselves. Making yourself open and available to conversations is a great way to expand your thinking, and allows you to contribute to other teams by providing a fresh perspective when appropriate.
