This week we meet Erika Muir, whose role as Director of Media & Communications at the Honda Center runs the gamut from shaping the future landscape of Orange County through the exciting ocV!BE project to concert promotion and so much more, all from the home of those awesome Ducks! Read on to meet Erika!
Q: Erika, please tell us about you! Your job, etc.?
A: As the Director of Media & Communications for Honda Center, I oversee all internal and external communications regarding Honda Center and the events that take place at the arena. Our most recent project ocV!BE is a $4 billion multi-use entertainment development with Honda Center as its anchor. The City Council approved the project in late September and received wonderful public enthusiasm. In addition to ocV!BE, we oversee all publicity for shows that bring their tour to Honda Center. Always working on something different keeps our Communication team busy, but it is thrilling to work on a family show, comedy show, and top-tier concert all on the same day.
Q: What brought you to the OCPRSA?
A: OCPRSA has been an invaluable resource and asset to progressing my career since college. The events have provided networking opportunities and a chance to catch up with colleagues I don’t always get to see in person as much as I’d like to. Our industry evolves rapidly, and it is helpful to have the tools to stay current.
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?
A: I’ve received a lot of insightful advice over the years, but the one that has stuck with me is “manage up.” We often face challenges with clients or superiors who may not fully understand public relations. Embrace your role and responsibilities to show you warrant a seat at the table when decisions are made. Once you gain the trust of your superiors, you can be a part of the strategy and planning process. Remember your value, worth and knowledge.
