This week we get to know Meg Treat, APR, whose amazing PR expertise spans from endurance sports to the halls of academia. Perhaps the OCPRSA member with the most ties to other PRSA chapters from coast to coast, Meg’s board service to our organization and profession are truly inspiring. Always a smiling face at OCPRSA events, it’s likely that many of us already call Meg a friend, but for those of you who don’t know her….you’re in for a true TREAT! Meet Meg!
Q: Meg, please tell us about you! Your job, etc.?
A: I’ve been a PRSA member for over a decade – and I’ve been a member of five different chapters! I started in Las Vegas, then went on to Los Angeles, Honolulu, North Florida and now OC.
I’ve worked in-house with corporations large and small, and have been a member of boutique agencies in the desert and on an island! Right now, I’m proud to split my time between two really unique roles: First and foremost, I am the proud owner of Treat Public Relations. I created this agency to serve a super niche industry – endurance sports.
I also spend part of my time teaching for my alma mater! I’m a limited-term lecturer at Purdue University, where I teach COM 257 in the Brian Lamb School of Communication. This is a practical class where students learn to write common PR documents like press releases, media alerts, pitches and more!
Outside of work, you can find me running, doing yoga, being a cat momma to my kitties Kailua and Lanikai and exploring the world with my husband Andrew.
Q: What has been the most meaningful part of your role as an OCPRSA board member and PR instructor at Purdue?
A: Both of these roles allow me to impact the growth of our profession. I was just telling my students earlier this week: I’m so excited about Public Relations! I really believe in what we do and the power we have to make a positive impact on the world. Both being on the board and teaching allow me to encourage current and future PR pros to grow – grow in creativity, grow in diversity, grow in ethics, grow in strategic thinking. That is so special and meaningful to me!
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR professionals?
A: Follow. Up. On. That. Pitch! You never know, today might be the day! Be persistent, be thoughtful and be relentless when you know you have an important story to tell!
