As we emerge from the pandemic, it can be a little concerning to think about meeting new people and talking about yourself. Don't worry! We're all going to be a bit socially awkward at first, but the good thing is that we're all in this together.
That being said, here’s a list of tips that’ll help you with your networking game:
Know Your Worth
Everyone at a networking event is worthy of being there, including YOU! Don’t let impostor syndrome kick in. Regardless of your position or title, just remember you are unique and have one-of-a-kind talents and abilities. So, before heading into any networking opportunity, remind yourself of all the great attributes you have to offer. Walk in with confidence!
Come Prepared
It’s easy to walk into a networking mixer and think that a conversation is enough to be remembered. While in some cases it is, the truth is that it’s rare. For that reason, showing up prepared with a business card is a great way to leave a lasting impact. To really stand out, consider creating unique, personalized cards that are a clear reflection of you!
Don't Be Shy - Say Hi
While being the first to initiate a conversation can be a bit awkward – it’s better than sitting in silence. Most likely everyone else in the room feels the same way and may also be experiencing a slight case of nerves. But don’t let that get the best of you: Smile and say hello to everyone you meet. At the end of the day, everyone is there for a reason, whether that be to gain exposure, make introductions or simply create new connections. Remember everyone in attendance is there because they want to be!
Leave the Agenda at Home
While networking mixers are a great way to score a job, don’t miss out on the opportunity to make friends. Live in the moment and try to create real relationships with the people around you by displaying kindness and a genuine interest in everyone you meet. People are more likely to remember you for your kindness than for the rehearsed script you may have in your back pocket.
Listen – Really Listen
Most of the time, when people converse with strangers, they’re not actually listening. With all of the built-up nerves, it’s easy to get lost in your thoughts as you try to figure out what you’re going to say next to keep the conversation going. Strive to actively listen when others speak to learn more about them and build an authentic connection. If your goal is to have sincere conversations at your next networking mixer, listen intently.
Never Dismiss Anyone
Networking is all about meeting new people, learning more about them and discovering their values. It may be easy to dismiss someone (even accidentally!), but leave that mentality at home. Do not make the mistake of dismissing someone after just a minute of top-level chitchat. Keep the conversation going. You never know what you’ll learn!
Follow Up
Finally, after a successful networking session, follow up if someone makes an impression. If you told someone you would keep in touch or connect with them online, then do it! It’s imperative that you both follow up, and follow through. For networking to be successful, you must be a person of your word and nurture those new relationships. For a quicker connection, use your QR code on LinkedIn to share your profile instantly!
With all of this in mind, will we see you at the next OCPRSA event?
