This week we meet Nicole Steele, a rising PR star. As a Biola University public relations major, Nicole is also serving as the Public Relations Student Society of America’s Vice President of Brand Engagement. Congratulations on this exciting role, Nicole!
Q: Please tell us about you! Your academics, internships, etc.?
This fall, I will be entering my junior year at Biola University. I'm majoring in Public Relations and double minoring in Communication Studies and Biblical and Theological Studies. I first found PR through my time in Venturing, which is a youth-led branch of the Boy Scouts of America. After working in several communication-based roles within Venturing, I settled into the role of Founder and Editor in Chief of their national publication. I've also worked as a Communications Intern for Benchmark, the Account Executive at Biola PRSSA's student-run PR agency, and a variety of other public relations-based volunteer roles. Outside of PR, I'm a second-degree black belt in kempo karate, love dancing, and spend as much time with friends and family as possible.
Q: What brought you to the Public Relations Student Society of America?
I first joined PRSSA to get more involved with Biola's PR department, but I honestly didn't know much about PRSSA other than the vague fact that it held many great resources and opportunities for students. I quickly got more involved with PRSSA through 6th Street PR -- Biola's student-run and PRSSA-affiliated PR firm -- because I wanted to gain more professional experience and try out a new facet of PR. As I fell in love with PRSSA's mission to equip ethically responsible PR students for their future professions, I also grew a passion for empowering our next generation of PR professionals, which is a driving factor behind me serving as PRSSA's 2022-2023 Vice President of Brand Engagement.
Q: What’s your favorite piece of advice for PR students?
My favorite piece of advice for PR students is to remember that no one is ever done learning and growing. That means a lot of things, but some of the most prominent lessons I've taken away from it include: asking lots of questions; not being so hard on yourself; and knowing that others are also not done learning, so you have valuable insight to add, regardless of your age.
